If you’re getting new countertops, a shower surround, or any other custom-cut surface, you’ll hear the word “template” come up early in the installation process. But what exactly does that mean — and what should you expect?

What Is a Template?
A template is a formal measurement of the space where your new material will be installed. It’s used for hard surfaces like countertops and showers to ensure everything is cut to exact specifications. This process is performed by the fabricators of the chosen material, who have the expertise and tools to ensure precise measurements and a perfect fit. This step also helps identify any existing issues — such as uneven walls, out-of-square corners, or other details — before fabrication begins.
When Does a Template Happen?
The templating appointment is scheduled after your material has been selected. Once your design choices are finalized, our team will arrange a convenient time for the fabricators to come out and take measurements.

Do You Need to Be There?
Homeowners are always welcome to be present during the templating process. However, there’s no need to worry if you can’t be — a member of our team will always be on-site to ensure everything runs smoothly and to answer any questions from the fabricator.
How Long Does It Take?
The time spent on templating can vary depending on the size and complexity of your project. For example, a small bar or vanity might take just 20–30 minutes, while a larger kitchen or multi-surface project could take up to an hour or more.
During this time, the fabricators will carefully measure every surface, note any irregularities in walls or cabinetry, and mark important details like seams, overhangs, or cutouts for sinks and faucets. It’s a meticulous process, but taking this extra care ensures that your finished pieces fit perfectly once installed.

How Long After Templating Will the Material Arrive?
After templating, your material is sent to fabrication, where it’s cut, finished, and prepared for installation. Depending on lead times and material availability, this process typically takes about 3–7 weeks.
Our team ensures that this process fits seamlessly within your overall project timeline, so receiving and installing your new surfaces won’t delay the rest of your renovation or design project.

Bringing Your Project to Life
Templating is an exciting step because it means your project is officially in motion! It’s where all your design choices start taking shape behind the scenes. By working closely with experienced fabricators, our team helps make sure every measurement is spot-on — so when your new surfaces arrive, they’re ready to install and ready to shine.
